Saudi Arabia drops face masks rule and most COVID-19 restrictions from Monday June 13. Additionally, proof of vaccination status, Tawakkalna usage and COVID booster changes have been announced in the Kingdom.
The major coronavirus protocol change was announced by the Ministry of Interior on Monday June 13, and it takes effect the same day. As part of the new rules, it is no longer mandatory to wear a face masks indoors in Saudi Arabia.
Face masks no longer have to be worn in closed areas or outside in the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia, but there are some exceptions. Face masks must still be worn at the Grand Mosque and Prophet’s Mosque, or places where rules are issued by the Weaya Public Health Authority, according to the Saudi Press Agency.
Wondering about Tawakkalna status? You will no longer be required to show your health or vaccine status via the Tawakkalna app to enter public places and to travel on public transport or board a plane, with some exceptions.

Changes have also been made to COVID-19 vaccination booster requirements. The new maximum time allowance between a second COVID vaccine and a booster shot has been extended to eight months for those wanting to travel outside of Saudi Arabia. The allowance was previously set at three months. Again, the new Saudi Arabia COVID rule does not apply to certain age groups who status is specified by the Health Ministry on the Tawakkalna application.
The Ministry of Interior decided to lift the precautionary and preventive measures related to combating the coronavirus pandemic due to Saudi Arabia’s vaccination programme and high immunisation rate.
The Ministry is still encouraging Saudi citizens to get vaccinated.
On Monday June 20, the Ministry of Interior announced the lifting of “suspension of travel for citizens to Ethiopia, Turkey, Vietnam and India” based on the current coronavirus situation. The move applies to direct and indirect travel for citizens to the previously stated countries.
Several major COVID restrictions in Saudi Arabia were scrapped March. Coronavirus protocols were eased at schools, unvaccinated travellers were allowed to enter Saudi Arabia, social distancing was eased and face masks were no longer mandatory outside.
