A video posted on social media by Turki Al-Sheikh, chairman of the board of the General Entertainment Authority, has sent wrestling fans in a spin. It looks like The Undertaker may appear at the WWE Crown Jewel event in Riyadh on Thursday October 21.
How big a deal is this? Well, The Rock may have wider fame outside the ring as a Hollywood star, but The Undertaker is arguably the most successful of all wrestlers.
He was the longest-serving employee of WWE, retiring in 2020 30 years to the day after his first fight for the organisation. He won 21 consecutive victories in the annual WrestleMania event, and holds four WWE (or WWF as used to be known) championships, three for World Heavyweight and six for World Tag Team.
And he’s snapping at The Rock’s heels: Netflix recently released a heavily hyped interactive show called Escape The Undertaker, where the viewer decides what actions to take in order to escape the wrestler’s evil clutches.
Add to this the fact that wrestling fans were disappointed when The Undertaker did not appear at the 2019 WWE Crown Jewel as had once been expected, and that the 56-year-old wrestler’s last appearance, back in late 2020, was billed as the Undertaker’s Final Farewell, and you start to see why this is shaping up as a day for the history books.
The WWE Crown Jewel will mark day two of the Riyadh Season. If this is anything to go by, the two-month festival promises to be an extraordinary undertaking…
