If you’re scared of heights, now might be a good time to look away. That thing in the picture above is the Sky Bridge 721, the new longest suspension footbridge in the world and a frankly terrifying feat of engineering. At 721 metres long (almost half a mile), 95 metres high and just 1.2 metres wide, even if you’re not scared of heights, we wouldn’t blame you for getting the shivers with this one.
The Sky Bridge is in the Dolní Morava resort in East Bohemia, Czech Republic. It’s in the foothills of the Jeseniky Mountains and straddles a valley with the Mlýnský stream in the distance below. Spanning two mountains, the Slaměnka and the Chlum, it’s a spectacular feat of construction in an area of astonishing natural beauty.
The Sky Bridge is the longest footbridge in the world, but the previous titleholder was actually rather disputed. Officially, it was the Arouca 516 in Portugal, which was completed in 2021 and spans – you guessed it – 516 metres. Unofficially, however, the 567 metre-long Baglung Parbat Footbridge in Nepal took the title.
In any case, Sky Bridge now beats the even Baglung Parbat by a whopping 154 metres. Here’s a few extra snaps of the bridge.
Beside its supremely lengthy footbridge, the Dolní Morava resort is certainly worth a visit in its own right. In the summertime it’s renowned for its hiking paths, mountain-biking trails, rollercoasters and adventure parks, while in the winter it’s a popular ski resort. The Sky Bridge 721 is also near another view-based attraction called the Sky Walk, a 55-metre spiral walkway with similarly phenomenal (if marginally less scary) views out over the valley.
The bridge also includes an educational trail titled the ‘Bridge of Time’: a two kilometre, 90-minute-long walk which takes visitors through the area’s history from 1938 to 2021 and includes games and bits of augmented reality.
The Sky Bridge 721 is open now. You can find out more information about both the bridge and Dolní Morava here.
