Bienalsur returns to Riyadh with a showcase of 20 international artists

Third outing of the exhibition houses more than 30 works of art by talent from around the world

We’ve all been there: we get the latest update on just how much screen time we use and wonder if we spend more time in the digital world than the real world. At the Bienalsur (the International Biennial of Contemporary Art of the South), it asks artists to explore such themes in its exhibition “Echoes: A World Between Analogue and Virtual”.

Now returning for the third time to Riyadh, the exhibition opened on October 15 and takes place in the JAX District, Diriyah, just on the outskirts of Riyadh. Bienalsur brings together more than 20 artists from 14 countries and showcases 30 works of art.

Within the grand theme, the works cover topics ranging from politics to the environment. There’ll also be the chance to see local talent, as five Saudi artists will be participating in the exhibition.

Anibal Jozami, general director of UNTREF and Bienalsur, says “ Bienalsur is a space for continuous dialogue and the participation of these artists from diverse backgrounds in Saudi Arabia is part of a necessary, vital, and promising context of cultural exchange.

“It links artists, curators and diverse social groups from different backgrounds and experiences on an equal footing, thus building new circuits of exchange only possible within the framework of this project. With an unprecedented modality, it includes curatorial works and projects that result from an international open call, along with guest artists and works from collections of different origins.”

Participating artists include Darren Almond, Dania Al-Saleh, Joel Andrianomiarisu, Hugo Avita and Cecil Bart. After its stint in Riyadh, the exhibition will then move to Qasr Khuzam in Jeddah from November 30 to December 30. So minimise that screen time and maximise that art time.

Until Nov 15. Open Sat-Thu 10am-10pm, Fri 1pm-10pm. JAX District, Diriyah, engage.moc.gov.sa/bienalsur
