Launched in 2010, designer Reem Al Khanal’s eponymous label has become well known for the distinct cut of its lines. From wide, cuffed pants to bold drop sleeves, block colours to minimalist detailing, every timeless piece feels instantly iconic.
Revival, the latest Reem Alkhanal collection, sees the label revisit past designs. Al Khanal, the woman behind some of Saudi’s most recognisable womenswear explains why she chose the concept, and why you need to shop the label.
Tell us more about Revival – what’s this line all about for you?
I came back after years of absence with this collection, through which I wanted revive all my “it” pieces, which I didn’t think got the attention they deserved. I wanted to revive my brand with different colours and simple designs, encourage the women wearing them to mix and match different pieces, and to create looks suitable for both day and night, to keep up with this fast-paced world.
Who are your collections for?
I design for all ages and shapes. I don’t want any lady to come to my shop and not be able to find anything that suits her. My favourite client is a lady in her 70s, who is just so fashionable and really loves fashion. I also have clients who are just 16 years old. I’m proud to dress everybody. What my clients have in common is that they are all unconventional and they prefer simple looks that they can mix and match between different pieces.
You certainly deviate from classic designs. What challenges has this presented?
My Reem Alkhanal designs are simple but daring, and inspired by heritage. I just love the Najdi dress, and my designs are always inspired by traditional clothes, which early on made it hard to get noticed. I also once launched a collection inspired by Saudi menswear, and I got a lot of responses – both negative and positive.
What inspires your Reem Alkhanal work?
Everything. From songs and photos to people and history. I am fascinated with Saudi heritage, I always have been. When I started my career in 2010, everybody warned me about bringing [too much] heritage into my designs. Now, it’s a trend.
Songs inspire you – what music are you listening to right now?
I just love ‘All You Need Is Love’, and must be Wael Kfoury’s ‘El Bint El Awiye’ [‘Strong Girl’].
How would you describe Saudi fashion industry? And what’s next for the fashion scene in the country?
We still need a lot of improvements in the infrastructure, the workshops and the skilled labour. I know many of young women who studied in the sewing institute and can’t find jobs. When we have factories, this will change for sure, and will create many opportunities. I am sure that Saudi labour can compete and outperform [others around the world]. I believe home-grown fashion brands will flourish, because our purchasing power is huge, and the doors are open to creativity and production, [thanks to] the support of the government.
What’s next?
Wait for me. I will surprise you with something new…
