The desert In a jar craze shows no signs of stopping in Riyadh, with layer upon Instagrammable layer of goodness giving rise to a league of sweet spots popping up across the city.
One of the longest-running spots is Jarlicious at The Zone, which has been jarring everything from Lotus-pistachio cheesecake to mango-saffron tiramisu and black forest gateau since 2014 – racking up tens of thousands of followers in the process.
While the menu has since expanded to offer a range of French toasts, hearty main courses and larger dessert plates, the core jar-based offering has not been forgotten.
Among the simpler options is a rich and decadent chocolate ganache topped with miniature chunks of brownie, while the self-saucing molten cakes (we go for Lotus, naturally) are given a glow-up with a twist of edible gold foil.
In the interests of balance, we delve into the full dessert menu and swoop straight for the curiously named ‘sushi cake’.
Fortunately there’s no seaweed in sight, with four ‘rolls’ of delicate vanilla-almond sponge doused in strawberry sauce (rather than soy) served Japanese-style. We’ll take that over cucumber maki any day.
To stave off those cold winter nights, and much to the delight of throngs of Instagram followers, Jarlicious has also added hot chocolate to its menu.
But you won’t find any flavour-free cocoa powder here – this cup is pure melted Valrhona, bubbling right up to the edge and enveloping the chocolate disc floating on the surface.
Like everything at Jarlicious, trust us, it has to be seen to be believed. So enough salivating over other people’s Insta feed – it’s time to get your spoon into this one.
