Sometimes when a venue is hugely popular it can actually be a culinary curse. Be warned: if you rock up to a Chunk, you may be waiting up to an hour for a piece a cake. So book in advance, as these cakes are worth planning your day around.
At the Takhassusi branch, the huge sign outside says “come and say hello” and lures you in with floor-to-ceiling windows that offer a riotously tempting vantage of that cake selection.
Inside, a big kitchen dominates the centre of the café and it’s mesmerising to watch the chefs at work. Otherwise, the décor is understated, with grey marble countertops, allowing the cakes to do the talking. And they’re certainly conversation-starters, as you’ll see people whipping their phones out to photograph these elegant cakes. And when the desserts are this darn good, the only sharing happening will be on Instagram.
There are two counters – savoury and sweet – at different ends of the café. Seriously handsome croissants include options scattered with cherry tomato and mozzarella, but it’s the sweet end that does the main trade, supported by a busy army of baristas.
When it comes to the cakes, you may get decision paralysis, but don’t worry – there’s no wrong choice. Fancier flavours include salted peanut butter cake, pistachio and rose cake, and lavender cake, and you’re a niftier diner than us if you can order just one.
Struggling? Go for the fan favourite – Chunk’s signature salted caramel popcorn dessert.
Sticky, sweet, scattered with its namesake and with a gooey filling, this one should be on every salted caramel fan’s radar.
Ultimately, it’s just one thing about Chunk that’s absolutely worth the wait.
