It’s official: Squid Game is coming back. Netflix’s smash hit is returning for a second season of wince-inducing kids’ games.
The dystopian Korean horror series became a record-breaker for the streaming service when it launched last year, quickly becoming a global cultural phenomenon that spawned everything from pop-ups to giant robot dolls in Sydney harbour (surprisingly fun).
Squid Game follows a group of people who are facing financial hardship and hope to win a life-changing cash prize by competing in deadly versions of popular children’s games such as Tug of War and Red Light, Green Light.
The show’s creator, Hwang Dong-Hyuk, sent a message to fans and confirmed the return of several characters – as well as some new faces.
‘It took 12 years to bring the first season of Squid Game to life last year,’ he says. ‘But it took 12 days for Squid Game to become the most popular Netflix series ever. And now, Gi-hun returns. The Front Man returns. Season 2 is coming. The man in the suit with ddakji might be back.’
No release date has been confirmed yet by Netflix, but it was previously reported that Squid Game’s second series won’t air until late 2023, at the earliest.
‘Join us once more for a whole new round,’ says Hwang. Thank you, we absolutely will.
