Transport links in Bahrain are set to get even better.
Bahrain and Saudi Arabia have signed a BHD3.3 million contract with three firms who will begin work on the King Hamad causeway project.
The King Fahd Causeway Authority has signed an agreement with KPMG, AECOM and CMS who will design the new bridge and develop the financing model.
King Hamad causeway will run parallel to the current link with Saudi Arabia, and work is set to begin in 2021.
The 25 km long bridge will also include two railway lines to eventually become part of the proposed Gulf Railway.
His Excellency Eng. Kamal bin Ahmed Mohammed, Minister of Transportation and Telecommunications, said: “We are pleased to announce the appointment of the main consultancy consortium to start developing all necessary requirements and the financial model required for the construction of the new King Hamad causeway.
“This is a strategic project for us which will further enhance our logistics sector and the links between our two countries allowing us to realise common aspirations and reinforce the strong bilateral relations we have with the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia.”
It is hoped the new causeway will decrease congestion. The news comes after VIVA Bahrain proposed an automated payment system that could reduce commute times by 40 minutes.
Bahrain is currently working on a number of causeways, including a bridge that will connect Diyar Al-Muharraq, Sayah and Bahrain Bay.
