Saudi Arabia is joining cities across the world to celebrate World Cities Day. Created by the United Nations, World Cities Day was established back in 2013 as a way of encouraging sustainable urbanisation and addressing climate change. Translated: it helps to raise awareness about the challenges presented by the lack of sustainability and promotes a global appreciation towards city life.
The first World Cities Day was celebrated in Shanghai, China, back in 2014. This event not only promotes cooperation between countries but also addresses how to move forward and help communities.
Each year, the UN chooses a theme and a sub-theme for each World Cities Day. This year’s is “Adapting Cities to Climate Resilience,” which is one of the most talked-about topics globally and locally. The theme addresses climate-related disasters, which include floods, droughts, sea-level rise, heatwaves, landslides and storms.
Recently, we have also seen His Royal Highness Prince Mohammed bin Salman bin Abdulaziz commit to cutting Saudi Arabia’s carbon emissions to net-zero by 2060.
At the heart of Saudi Arabia’s giga-projects, including Neom and The Red Sea Project, is a desire to create the perfect balance between modernisation and create sustainable developments.
When it comes to Saudi Vision 2030‘s biggest projects, The Red Sea Development is one of the world’s most ambitious regeneration projects. It also recently signed up nine hotel management companies, which are creating sustainable hotels and showing the hospitality world that it is easy being green. Happy World Cities Day.
