Diriyah Gate already has culture and heritage at its heart, as it boasts its very own UNESCO World Heritage Site, At-Turaif. Now, it can add sports to that list, as the Saudi Sports for All Federation, which is run and led by president HRH Prince Khaled bin Alwaleed bin Talal Al Saud, have signed an agreement to promote and encourage sport in Diriyah and beyond.
Diriyah Gate has already proven itself as an international destination for sporting events, as it hosted DGDA Show Jumping Tournament and Formula E Championship, which relied on renewable energy. With the new plans, however, it means that it will also have an impact on the local community. So wannabe fitness fanatics and everyday gym-goers will have their sporting needs met, as there’ll be a spectacular schedule of activities in Diriyah Gate as well as Wadi Hanifah.
Diriyah Gate Development Authority’s CEO, Jerry Inzerillo, has stated that there will be a mix of global sporting events alongside grassroots activities. While HRH Prince Khaled bin Alwaleed bin Talal Al Saud confirmed that the developments will promote sports at a community level.
As part of Saudi Vision 2030, the SFA was given the task to increase the number of people in the kingdom participating in sports and physical activities by the year 2030. While many of us know that Vision 2030 was launched by HRH Crown Prince Mohammed Bin Salman to reduce the kingdom’s dependence on oil and diversify Saudi’s economy, it also plans to promote culture, heritage, and enhanced lifestyle options. Translated: it wants us to have healthier lives, get fit and take part in more physical activity.
Since both the SFA and DGDA have a common goal, which is to serve and preserve the local community, it looks like your sporting options in Riyadh are about to get a whole lot more exciting.
