Maris Shepherd exhibition opens at Naila Art Gallery

The never before seen work comes from the collection of the Prince Sultan of Saudi Arabia

The artist Maris Shepherd is renowned for capturing history on her canvas. Having first visited Saudi Arabia in 1999, she is back with an exhibition at Naila Art Gallery here in Riyadh. The exhibition, which starts on November 17, offers you the chance to view art that carries an unexpected backstory and has never been viewed in public.

Shepherd’s canvases look a little like history in motion, as her work covers big themes including ancient ruins, old landmarks, and even royalty. When Shepherd first visited the country she fell in love with the culture. Her paintings have even been commissioned by some of the most prolific people in the country, one of them being the Prince Sultan of Saudi Arabia.

Shepherd was first acquainted with the Prince Sultan when she was painting on a farm. When he happened to spot her painting, he introduced himself, she showed off her work and then he bought all of them right then and there.

There are a dozen paintings in this collection, which are now going on display. The exhibition will shed light on Shepherd’s unique experience. Prince Sultan is now also publishing a few of her watercolours in a book. Along with the Prince Sultan, she has also painted pieces commissioned by other members of the Saudi Arabian royal family. So get ready for some culture fit for royalty.

Open Sat-Thu 2pm-10pm. Al Takhassousi, Al Mathar Ash Shamali, gallerynaila.com (011 880 5352)
