AMC Cinemas will be the first cinema in the world to accept cryptocurrency

Bitcoin will be accepted in AMC Cinema by the end of the year

While cryptocurrency sometimes sounds like something that a Bond villain might use, it could soon be your currency of choice as more and more companies are accepting it as legal tender. AMC Cinemas has joined the growing list of businesses that will accept Bitcoin, and has announced that its 950 theatres will accept the currency by the end of the year.

In Saudi Arabia, AMC Cinemas have been pioneers when it comes to the cultural front line. When the ban on cinemas lifted in 2018, it was AMC Cinemas that were the first to welcome audiences and screen films. So it comes as no surprise to find that they are at the forefront of the digital revolution and upgrading how we spend.

Companies like Starbucks and PayPal already accept Bitcoin, but the move will make AMC Cinemas the first movie chain in the world to accept cryptocurrency as a payment option.

CEO Adam Aron tweeted: “Cryptocurrency enthusiasts: you likely know AMC has announced that we will accept Bitcoin for online ticket and concession payments by year-end 2021. I can confirm today that when we do so, we also expect that we similarly will accept Ethereum, Litecoin and Bitcoin cash.”

Sound a bit too futuristic for you? Don’t worry, you’ll still be able to pay with plain old cash (or contactless). Speaking of futuristic, have you tried AMC’s Prime screens yet? With total sensory immersion, it’s not a movie-going experience you’ll forget in a hurry…
